Mileage Cares: The Domino Effect of our CSR Initiative

As a company, we have a stake in the well-being of our communities, and we seek to make a difference through our community contributions.
Mileage Communications has always been supportive of the local education scene in Singapore. For many years, the company has hosted interns from institutes of higher learning and provided them with fruitful experiences in industry. Many of them have since progressed with career pathways that take them far and wide. But the critical value of education lies in one’s formative years, and the company was planning to further an initiative that would benefit younger students.
When Epigram, a local bookstore, appealed for customer support during the COVID-19 period, Mileage responded by buying 164 children’s storybooks on 23 October 2020. This had a material impact on their sales, and there was also a positive effect for the local authors whose books they sell.
Typically, local authors will conduct book-reading in schools or book signing events. As these authors are unable to promote their books in schools and other fora due to the lockdown, their income has been affected. This gesture will thus support the local authors who have been heavily hit by the COVID-19 lockdown.
On 26 October 2020, these books were handed over to Mrs Rina Liang, Principal of Dazhong Primary School. This school has performed well over the past few years with students attaining good results in their Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLEs), and it is also where the company’s Executive Director offers her services as Chairperson of the School’s Advisory Committee. The school librarians and students were grateful for the contribution, and Mileage Communications is certain that this will expand the school’s repository of library books.
Mileage believes in the value of education. The company also believes that any CSR effort should have a domino impact so that multiple parties can benefit from the endeavour. A holistic education can be attained by cultivating a habit of reading and writing in one’s formative years, and this CSR initiative is in line with Mileage’s drive to enrich the hearts and minds of young, impressionable Singaporean students.
